By completing a brief checklist and inputting several standard values readily available during routine care, BiliStop provides an immediate estimate of the risk of re-admission if phototherapy is halted at that moment.

The app's algorithm is derived from a comprehensive 2017 study, “A Clinical Prediction Rule for Rebound Hyperbilirubinemia Following Inpatient Phototherapy,” published in Pediatrics by Chang et al. Its validity has been evaluated through a Mayo Clinic IRB-approved clinical study involving providers responsible for neonatal care. Results indicate that BiliStop enhances decision accuracy compared to traditional methods, with high user satisfaction among clinicians.

Importantly, BiliStop operates without collecting or storing any personally identifiable information. It aims to support informed clinical decisions efficiently, saving valuable time—often just seconds—and assisting both experienced and less experienced providers in making potentially life-saving determinations.

The intended users of BiliStop include neonatologists, pediatricians, family medicine physicians, neonatal nurse practitioners, medical residents, medical students, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of newborns in hospital and outpatient settings. The application should serve solely as a supplemental reference and educational resource.
